Following Russian warship fired warning shots at a Turkish vessel in the Aegean Sea on Sunday to avoid a collision, Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, has disclosed that: "Ours was only a fishing boat. It seems to me that the reaction of the Russian naval ship was exaggerated."

The Minister added that: "Russia and Turkey certainly have to re-establish the relations of trust that we have always had, but our patience has a limit."

173 Nigerians who have completed their National Youth Service (NYSC) have been given letters of employment  for immediate appointment into the various ministries in the Civil Service.

The Federal Civil Service Commission [FCSC] officially handed over appointment letters to the 173 ex-National Youth Service Corp [NYSC] who served in 2012, 2013 and 2014 for distinguishing themselves during their service years.

The FCSC Chairman, Deaconess Joan Ayo commended them saying: "You are a special breed, congratulations for this achievement. You did not only excel in the Universities but even in your NYSC.

It shows you are hard working that is why you have been able to distinguish yourselves among your peers". She said: "Your appointment is on merit and that is why it has nothing to do with the federal character principle.  "Your selection is devoid of political influence. It has nothing to do with political affiliation.

"You are a special breed and I really congratulate you. You have exemplified good character and hard-work. It is natural for you to display integrity and patriotism, and that is why you are here." Ayo admonished the new appointees to sustain the character that earned them the award "and even improve on it".

"You have also displayed a high sense of integrity, while others were sleeping, you were just there to contribute your quota to the survival and development of the nation. A few months ago, you were made to undergo various induction training by this commission, all geared towards preparing you for the task ahead. Today, as we present to you these letters, you are expected to visit the office of your state commissioner for proper documentation".

The  Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) in a statement signed by its Secretary General, Alade Lawal in Lagos have urged President Buhari to ensure their salaries are paid promptly.

"This is the same ugly situation that prevailed last year until ASCSN threatened a nation-wide strike before salaries of workers could be paid. This persistent policy to kill-joy by past Federal Administrations should not be allowed to continue and the President has the capacity to bring it to an end,'' it said, while advising the President to guard against fifth columnist that pushed past governments to implement anti-people's policies.

In addition,  "We appeal to the President not to allow the goodwill that brought him to power to be eroded by unpatriotic citizens,'' the statement said.

bonny pirate

Pirates who have made traveling to and from Bonny Island in Rivers State a terrible experience met their doom on Monday in the hands of a joint team comprising the Nigeria Police Force, Joint Task Force (JTF), and some Bonny youths. The collaborative effort was in reaction to yesterday's attack on three boats conveying passengers to and from Bonny.

According to an eyewitness, during their search they encountered the hoodlums who were poised to launch another attack and after a brief gun fight, they apprehended one of the suspected pirates while others escaped.

Seafarers, indigenes and residents of the area have over the years been subjected to untold suffering due to the heinous activities of these criminals and just last month they urged President Muhammadu Buhari to come to their aide.

The eyewitness who is also an indigene of Bonny said "The sea pirates attack us at will and dispossess travelers of their valuables ranging from cash to jewelries and other items. Most of the time they are pushed into the river or ordered to alight onto the muddy shores of the river.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that the suspected pirates whose gang member was apprehended today are natives of Asarama Town in Andoni Local Government Area of the State. Meanwhile, tension is high at the moment as many people in Bonny and Andoni fear that a possible inter-communal conflict between the two neighbouring communities is imminent following the attack on pirates.

Residents of the area are making a passionate appeal to the Rivers State Government, the security agencies and other stakeholders to intervene.
