Three years after the gang-raping of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student on a bus in Delhi, the victim's mother has publicly revealed her daughter's name. The student who died after the brutal rape by six men caused a global uproar in 2012.
The victim's mother, Asha Singh, announced to a crowd on Wednesday that she felt "no shame" in announcing her daughter's name. I say this in front of you all that her name was Jyoti Singh. There is no need for us to feel any shame. It is the perpetrators of heinous crimes who must feel ashamed of themselves. Her name was Jyoti Singh."
The identities of Rape victims under Indian law are hidden as an effort to protect them from being discriminated in society.
